A Proclamation on the 60th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act

By President Joseph R. Biden Jr.

Join us in Celebrating the Incredible Milestones of Our Nation’s History!

This marks the milestone of the United States’ independence, where our forefathers bravely declared freedom from colonial rule and fought for the principles of liberty and equality. The journey towards civil rights has been a long and arduous one, with countless leaders who have dedicated themselves to the cause.

Through their tireless efforts, America has come a long way in embracing the values upon which it was founded. Each passing year has seen progress towards a more inclusive society, where every individual is treated with respect and given equal opportunities regardless of their race, gender, or background.

As we reflect on the legacy of those who came before us, let us take a moment to celebrate the milestones we have achieved. Our nation’s history is filled with stories of triumph and resilience, from the abolition of slavery to the suffrage movement and the fight for civil rights. It is a testament to the power of unity and the unwavering belief in the American dream.

Today, we stand together as a nation that continues to evolve and grow, embracing the values of diversity and inclusivity. Our progress serves as a reminder that change is possible, and that we all have a role to play in shaping a better future for generations to come.

By enacting the Civil Rights Act in 1964, the United States embarked on a transformative journey towards equality and justice for all Americans, regardless of their racial and ethnic background. Decades ago,  courageous civil rights leaders and activists marched with American flags to compel the government to uphold America’s founding ideals.

This year, we marched again, not only to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, but also celebrate the great progress our country has made towards its founding ideals.

Let us honor the courage and sacrifice of the previous generations of civil rights leaders by continuing the effort to achieve Dr. King’s Unfinished Dream.

Our shared history, shared struggles, and shared support for each other have brought us to this moment.

Let us come together to celebrate the progress of civil rights and show our deep appreciation for the brave individuals who fought for American Civil Rights and paved the way for all of us, as well as for those who are exemplary advocates that continue to advance equality for all. It is a time to honor their courage and determination, and to recognize the immense impact they have had on our nation. Join us in commemorating their tireless efforts and celebrating the strength of unity as we march towards a future of equality and solidarity.

When Is The 60th Anniversary Of Civil Rights Act?

July 2, 2024 marks the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

So Everyone Marches On Their Own & Celebrate Together?

Take a step back in time and honor the legacy of those who paved the way for equality. Join us in a symbolic walk to pay tribute to the brave souls who marched at the U.S. capital over 60 years ago. Show your support by taking a walk during the week of the anniversary and carry their spirit forward. It’s a powerful gesture that speaks volumes.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was enacted on July 2, 1964 with signature by President Lyndon Johnson and strong bipartisan support (289-126 in the House, 73-27 in the Senate). It was the first of three landmark legislations, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (CRA64), the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA65), and the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 (INA65). It outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin, and prohibited employment discrimination and racial segregation in schools and public accommodations. Being the first of the three landmark legislations, the CRA64 has a singular historic significance because its passage provided strong momentum for the subsequent two legislations.

Considered “the Third Making of the United States” according to some prominent historians, these three landmark legislations together transformed the country to a multicultural democracy from a segregated society dominated by white supremacy since the end of the Civil War.

Given the grave challenges facing the country in recent times, it is even more important for all Americans to come together to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act and and renew our commitment to the Founding Ideals and a “more perfect union” with equality and justice for every American.
